50 Decent Films on Netflix

50 decent films on netflix

A summer of great films

One summer, I worked for an education examination body in the UK helping prepare design coursework for moderators, move stuff around a warehouse, check the number of marks on a paper equalled the score on the cover… all pretty mundane stuff. However, in stepped Don and Ray to make it awesome.

Both retired. Don was over 70 doing it for a bit of extra cash. Ray was in his late 60s. He’d been a welder his whole life and at the age of 63 decided to go to University to study Film & History – because that’s what he loved most. Being a fan of film myself I was keen to find out what Ray’s favourite films were – seeing as though he grew up in the 50s and had seen a lot of films across a lot of decades and was passionate about it. The couple of months I spent there were purely spent talking about different films and me noting down tons of films that Don and Ray would tell me, to then buy them when I got home. I bought them all and loved it. DVDs coming through the post every day and buying more that were on my lists in charity shops and markets at the weekends.

Anyway, it heightened my appreciation and I love hearing what films people love – and also hearing what someone likes and then trying to recommend others they might like but haven’t seen.

This blog is supposed to be purely for design, so this post is a little left of centre. But fuck it. It’s my blog and people are probably gonna get through a lot of films in the coming weeks – may as well avoid the bad ones. You don’t want to be throwing 128 minutes away giving divided attention to Ryan Reynolds in 6 Underground, for instance. The vast majority of future posts will focus on design and I aim to put out more on here than I have in the last 18 months (none!). The content I have written in that period has either been as a guest author or speaker for different design publications and sites, or from posting articles direct to LinkedIn which you can check out HERE. I got told the other day though that this blog on my site is officially stated as reading material for modules on a number of design and engineering courses at Universities in the UK so that’s given me a kick to post a bit more design content – so stay tuned!

Here’s the first draft of my list. Let me know what you’d add. Also, this list is limited to what is currently on Netflix in the UK. There may well be more decent movies available on Netflix outside the UK.
